The show also features original Britpop girl BILLE DAVIS whose international hits included "Tell Him", "Angel Of The Morning", "I Want You To Be My Baby" and "Nights In White Satin", plus acclaimed Northern Soul vocalist KEITH POWELL. EVERLASTING LOVE CONCERT

NEW AMEN CORNER plus Special Guest STEVE ELLIS (former lead singer of THE LOVE AFFAIR)

Tickets £13.50 (or £15 from Oct 2). See TICKET BOOKINGS
section at the top on how to purchase your tickets.

Returning by popular demand after their sold out concert two years ago are New Amen Corner and their good friend Steve Ellis, THE VOICE of The Love Affair on the smash worldwide number one "Everlasting Love" and other mega hits like "Rainbow Valley", "A Day Without Love", "One Road" and "Bringing On Back The Good Times".

Steve, a Mod icon in the "Swinging Sixties", and The Love Affair sold more singles in Britain in 1968 than any other group apart from The Beatles.

He was just 17 when "Everlasting Love" hit the top of the charts and with his good looks became a pin-up for the girls, who drowned out many a Love Affair concert with their screaming!

This is a rare and unique chance to see Steve because he does not perform all that often these days as he has so many other projects on the go. But he is here tonight because New Amen Corner are his favourite band to work with and only they can recreate the big sound of his records.

When "Everlasting Love" was recorded, the studio bosses decided to use only Steve and brought in session musicians and an orchestra to replace the rest of the band because they did not think they could cut it. It was Steve's voice that made the record the mega international hit it proved to be.

Steve has been hailed as having one of the best voices along with Steve Marriott (The Small Faces) and Roger Daltrey (The Who) to come out of the Mod era, and more modern stars like Paul Weller hold him in high regard.

Sidelined for years by a horrific accident to his feet involving a forklift and then a family illness, Steve is now back in top form and teams up with New Amen Corner for what promises to be a night of musical dynamite.

"Arguably the hottest band on the circuit" is how The Beat magazine describes New Amen Corner, who pack the dance floor from start to finish with their parade of top hits from the "Summer Of Love" period. Their last five shows at Amersham have all been sold out.

Amen Corner, with their mixture of psychedelic, Mod and power pop sounds, enjoyed huge hits towards the end of the 60s with the likes of "Bend Me, Shape Me", "If Paradise Is Half As Nice", "High In The Sky" and "Hello Suzie".

The group never got back together after disbanding at the end of the 60s but the clamour from fans persuaded original founder member Alan Jones and sax man Frogman Curtis that the time was ripe to revive those marvellous sounds.

New Amen Corner's lead singer Glen Leon has been hailed as one of the finest voices on the circuit and the rest of the band, Frogman Curtis (saxophone/percussion), Leroy Small (lead guitar/vocals), Mick Lavender (keyboards), Dave Howson (bass) and Curly McVicar (drums/vocals), are all top-flight musicians.

Besides the Amen Corner catalogue, the "Corners" -- as they are affectionately known -- also perform hits by other greats such as The Move, The Herd, Manfred Mann, Procul Harum, The Casuals, The Small Faces, Pink Floyd -- and even The Beatles.

New Amen Corner, highly popular at venues round Britain, believe in putting on a concert with a big sound and showmanship.

Add Steve Ellis and you've got an "Everlasting Summer of Love" show to warm you up as the chilly nights of autumn set in!

HARMONY AND SOUL CONCERT

TONY BURROWS, SUE GLOVER, BILLIE DAVIS and KEITH POWELL (The ORIGINAL VOICES on some of the greatest and most memorable hit recordings)

Tickets £13.50 (or £15 from Nov 6). See TICKET BOOKINGS
section at the top on how to purchase your tickets.

You will probably never hear so many hits sung by the original VOICES on the records in one show as you will tonight!!!

Tony Burrows alone has been widely credited with singing lead vocals on hit singles for more groups than any other recording artist, both in the British charts and the U.S. charts.

He first sprang to fame with The Ivy League ("Tossing And Turning", "Funny How Love Can Be" and "That's Why I'm Crying").

But then he really hit the big time as the lead singer with The Flowerpot Men ("Let's Go To San Francisco", Edison Lighthouse ("Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes)", White Plains (""My Baby Loves Lovin'", "Julie Do Ya Love Me"", "When You Are A King", The Pipkins ("Gimme Dat Ding"), First Class ("Beach Baby"), and Brotherhood Of Man ("United We Stand").

From there the list just goes on and on -- hit after hit.

Tony was a legend among session singers at a time when producers often called on gifted vocalists like him to actually record the tracks instead of the star name or group.

Recording technology was relatively primitive then so producers did not want to waste precious and expensive studio time getting a number right and up to hit quality.

This could be a unique chance to see Tony in action as he has not performed much in recent years, but the voice is very much intact!

Joining him on the show will be Sue Glover, female voice on "United We Stand". This will make for a rare reunion of two of the original Brotherhood Of Man singers.

Sue was Tony's equivalent among female session singers of the day, going from studio to studio to appear on so many hits.

These included recordings with the likes of Dusty Springfield (listen to "Little By Little" for example and there is clearly more than Dusty on the recording!), Elton John, Englebert Humperdinck, The Love Affair, Lulu (that was her and her sister Sunny backing Lulu on the Eurovision hit "Boom Bang-a-Bang"), Tom Jones, David Bowie and Joe Cocker (think of the great backing vocals on "With A Little Help From Our Friends").

Also appearing tonight is Miss Billie Davis, the only Britpop girl still performing today and who had major international hits with "Tell Him", "Angel Of The Morning", "I Want You To Be My Baby" and "Nights In White Satin".

Billie has just been to Spain to promote a re-recording of "I Want You To Be My Baby", which went number one there and in several South American countries.

Joining Tony, Sue and Billie on stage will be Keith Powell, one of the greatest voices on the Northern Soul circuit. When you hear him perform "When A Man Loves A Woman", you'll know why!

Keith and Billie enjoyed Northern Soul hits with "When You Move You Lose", "You Don't Know Like I Know" and "Swingin' Tight".

Backing all four singers will be The Hit Squad, a group of top flight musicians who have performed on national Solid Gold tours and worked with the likes of Rick Wakeman, Denny Laine, PJ Proby and Freddy Cannon.

SWINGING 60s CHRISTMAS CONCERT

CHRIS FARLOWE and VANITY FARE plus Special Guests MIKE TINSLEY of HEDGEHOPPERS ANONYMOUS, COLIN HARE of HONEYBUS and ALAN WARNER of THE FOUNDATIONS

Tickets £14 (or £15 from Nov 27). See TICKET BOOKINGS
section at the top on how to purchase your tickets.

This is a Christmas cracker of a show with a sensational Swinging Sixties line-up.

Topping the bill will be the legendary Chris Farlowe of "Out Of Time" fame and our band for the night will be Vanity Fare, still firing on all cylinders after their triumphant appearances across Britain earlier this year on the prestigious Solid Silver Tour.

We are also proud to have three special guests on the show:

  • Mike Tinsley, the original lead singer with Hedgehoppers Anonymous ("It's Good News Week")
  • Colin Hare, original vocalist/guitarist with Honeybus ("I Can't Let Maggie Go")
  • Alan Warner, original lead guitarist/vocalist with The Foundations ("Baby Now That I've Found You", "Build Me Up Buttercup")

It is obviously getting harder with the passing of the years to put original hit-making 60s artists on stage for our audiences, but here we have a veritable parade of stars from that Golden Decade.

Chris Farlowe is the man with the powerhouse of a voice that propelled "Out Of Time" to the top of the charts all around the world in 1966.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones wrote the song especially for Chris, whose thundering and evocative vocal transformed the number into what is now a 60s classic. Mick believed in Chris and the song so much that he even acted as producer in the recording studio and supplied backing vocals.

Chris had other international hits with the likes of "Satisfaction", "Paint It Black", "Stormy Monday Blues", "Ride On Baby" and "Handbags And Gladrags", a song written by Mike d'Abo of Manfred Mann fame that has since been covered by many artists including The Stereophonics. But Mike originally wrote it especially for Chris, who was the first to take it into
the charts.

Today, Chris still leaves audiences spellbound -- a fact not lost on Van Morrison who frequently asks Mr "Out Of Time" to do special guest spots on his shows.

Vanity Fare, still boasting three members with roots in the band's heyday, were huge at the end of the 60s and were particularly popular in the United States where they had two top five hits.

Stunning vocal harmonies and bouncy and catchy tunes are their trademark, like "Hitchin' A Ride" that became something of an anthem for hippies catching a lift to the next "Flower Power" gathering.

"Early In The Morning" was an even bigger hit for Vanity Fare in Britain and their first chart entry "I Live For The Sun" had links with The Beach Boys camp. Their run of hits continued into the 70s across the world -- from "Summer Morning" in the United States to "Rock & Roll Is Back" in Germany.

Eddie Wheeler, Mark Ellen, Bernie Hagley and "new boy" Steve Oakman, son of Pete Oakman of The Swinging Blue Jeans, know how to get a party going with their own hits and covers ranging from The Beach Boys' "Barbara Ann" to The Four Seasons' "Sherry" to The Byrds' "Mr Tambourine Man".

Earlier this year, Vanity Fare were highly acclaimed in their own right and as the backing band for Brian Poole, Mike Pender, Peter Sarstedt and Dave Berry on the hugely successful Solid Silver Tour of Britain's leading theatres.

Completing our Christmas show line-up are our three special guests.

Mike Tinsley narrowly escaped court martial when the Royal Air Force found out he was the lead vocalist of Hedgehoppers Anonymous, a band that was soaring into the top five with "It's Good News Week".

Mike Tinsley (Hedgehoppers Anonymous)

He and three of the other four members of Hedgehoppers Anonymous were in the RAF and he worked on Vulcan bombers during the height of the 1962 Cuban crisis.

Today the former RAF corporal recalls being summoned to a meeting with the commanding officer of RAF Wittering near Stamford, Lincolnshire after News Of The World journalists and coach loads of girls turned up at the gates of the air base.

"The group captain said, 'Corporal Tinsley, I  believe you've made a record. Not that I'm a big pop fan but I see it's in the charts. Now we can't have this -- we can't have people turning up at a nuclear base demanding autographs because we're under the Official Secrets Act here'.

"The funny thing was that the station warrant officer who had marched us in, brought us to attention and told us to take our hats off etc then said, 'You can't court martial them sir because they're playing at the Officers Mess tonight'!

The group took their name from the term "Hedgehopping" that was used for the low-flying skills of the pilots of the 'V' bombers --  Vulcans, Victors and primarily Valiants -- that were based at RAF Wittering, with a nuclear strike capability.

Mike subsequently went on to become a successful songwriter whose material has been recorded by the likes of Kelly Marie and the late Joe Dolan.

The Honeybus, famed for the worldwide smash hit "I Can't Let Maggie Go", still enjoy critical acclaim today for their late 60s recordings of self-penned numbers -- rich in variety from lush string-backed songs to tracks that really rocked with blistering guitar riffs.

Colin was in the original line-up with Pete Dello, Ray Cane and Peter Kircher -- and he is still out there today touring as far afield as Japan to bring the sounds of The Honeybus to fans.

Many critics saw The Honeybus as Decca Records' answer to the Rubber Soul-era Beatles because of the harmonies and some catchy, hook-laden songs that were usually accompanied by brass and violins. The lyrics were notable and often carried some thoughtful themes.

Colin Hare (Honeybus)

"I Can't Let Maggie Go" reached number eight in Britain with its evocative baroque arrangement and tender harmonies.

Alan Warner was not only original lead guitarist/vocalist with The Foundations but was the man who came up with the group's name.

While other members came and went, Alan was there from  the beginning to the day The Foundations disbanded and played on every single record they produced.

The Tony MacCaulay and John McCleod composition "Baby Now That I've Found You" became the first hit for The Foundations. It went to the top of the British charts in September 1967 and reached the U.S. top 10 in early 1968.

Alan Warner (3rd from left) with 60s chart-toppers The Foundations

The hits kept flowing and included "Build Me Up Buttercup",  "In The Bad Bad Old Days", "Back On My feet Again", "Any Old Time" and "Born To Live, Born To Die".

"Build Me Up Buttercup" was notably written by former Manfred Mann lead singer Mike d'Abo in partnership with MacCaulay.

One of the finest lead guitarists to come out of the 60s, Alan has written many highly successful books on the guitar and is a leading tutor on the instrument. He is also in heavy demand by top artists to back them with his gifted lead guitar work.

This is a show for you to usher in a truly memorable Christmas. Don't miss it!

"One of the highlights of my holiday to England was discovering the tiny
but mighty Amersham Rock 'n' Roll Club to see '60s pop stars John Leyton and
Mike Berry, backed by The Outlaws, featuring Colin Pryce-Jones of London's Rapiers,
my favourite band on the planet. A good crowd filled the cozy venue. I particularly liked the pristine sound
and large dance floor. Not to mention two good bars! I left just short of midnight fully delighted"

FOR THE ATTENTION OF ARTISTS

Artists wishing to perform at the Club are welcome to phone Ralph Gowling on 01494-874916 or write to him at 24 Northdown Road, Chalfont St Peter, Bucks SL9 0LQ.

Please bear in mind:

1) We are a small venue and have a policy of pricing shows as modestly as possible.

2) We wish to cover our costs and maintain the club as a long-term regular and attractive venue for both artists and audiences.

3) We are committed through the shows to raise funds for Iain Rennie Hospice at Home and other local registered charities.

Due to the popularity of the policy in the past, we offer artists an 80-20 split on ticket sales. This motivates both parties to work to ensure success. It is obviously more beneficial to artists who can attract a good or full house.

All our shows comprise three sets with two approximate 20-minute intervals, both to give our audiences good value and to ensure the charity raffle goes smoothly. This means we need two and perhaps three acts on a bill.
